The summer is here. You’ve hung up the cap and gown. If you haven’t found a job already, it’s time to polish that resume and get to work, literally.
Of course, there is one problem. Thanks to the current economy, one can’t just mail out a resume and expect the job offers to come pouring in. Quite the contrary, with an incredible number of experienced people out there also fighting for your job, you have to start thinking outside of the box.
The job website Monster.com has come up with an interesting list of ways to improve one’s employment odds. Look them over and put them to use. They certainly beat a long, hot summer cooling one’s heels.
Think wide – A good example is just because you have a degree in nursing, don’t just limit yourself to hospitals, clinics and other health institutions. Nurses are also employed at public schools, cruise lines and resorts, corporate headquarters and law enforcement agencies. Brainstorm! Then apply whatever you thought up against a search engine like Google. Doing so can as much as quadruple the number of prospects you can work for.
Not Only Target a Company, But Do Some Research On It – The reason for this is to help design an introductory package about yourself. While your resume may be fairly straightforward, use your research to develop a cover letter explaining how your skills, experience and education will benefit the company. Don’t be afraid to be a bit creative here either. For instance, if while going to school you worked at a library, that means you have great secondary research skills.
Network – A good example is a young lady studying architecture. Not only does one of her cousins happen to be an HVAC architect, but her mother works in a green construction firm. She started twisting her family’s arms for contacts as soon as she passed her freshmen year and has already wrangled a paying internship for herself. Now entering her junior year, she has put together a small rolodex of contacts, with whom she keeps in touch. One gets the impression she’ll have her choice of jobs in two years because of her networking today.
Keep A Positive Attitude – Yes, it’s a tough economy out there. Just don’t let the news get you down. If it seems too depressing, turn the TV off and get back to doing research, writing cover and follow-up letters. The old bromide of when the going gets tough the tough get going has never been more true than it is today. Also, if you do meet with a recruiter, don’t let them know how tough the market is out there. They’re testing to see how negative you are. Companies want positive attitudes.
Stay Busy At All Costs – The last thing a company wants these days is a person who just stays home and watches TV. If you aren’t working, volunteer with a charitable cause, find a part time job, do something. Also, make sure the company understands you’re doing this until you work for them!
While you’re doing what you can to get the job you want, an online education is what is going to help you get there. Learning while continuing to earn is what many people have to do and taking an online course degree program is what helps them get there. It will help you too.
